Universal Music Group will introduce a 72-hour subscriber-only release window for new music in India from August 2026, giving paid streaming users exclusive early access before free-tier availability.
Universal Music Group (UMG) has made an announcement that for all music releases in India it will introduce a 72-hour subscriber-first release window that will start late August 2026. This marks a significant shift in the digital music distribution strategy of the country. Under the new model, newly released songs from the international and domestic artists of UMG will be available exclusively to paid subscribers on participating regional and global music streaming platforms for the first 72 hours following release. After this period of exclusivity, the music will become available on free tiers supported by ads.
The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the value of premium music subscriptions while encouraging listeners to adopt paid streaming services. As per UMG, the move forms an important part of its strategy in the long-term to help build in India a more sustainable music ecosystem by improving monetisation opportunities for rights holders, artists and songwriters.
India is one of the fastest-growing music streaming markets of the world, but the industry continues to face many challenges in converting its listener base into paying subscribers. With millions of users who rely on free streaming options, record labels have started exploring ways to create greater value for premium subscriptions.
The subscriber-first release model has been adopted in several international markets and has been designed to reward paying users with early access to new music while generating for creators stronger revenues. UMG believes this approach can lead to better growth across the music business by encouraging higher-quality fan engagement and supporting artist investment.
The rollout will apply to releases from Universal Music Group's Indian and global roster, covering both domestic artists and international superstars. The company said participating regional and global streaming platforms will implement the exclusivity of 72-hour window before making tracks available to free users.
