Mahalakshmi Iyer and Shriram Iyer Blend Music With Social Impact at NCPA

Held on October 1 at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, the concert combined live music with a social initiative focused on transformation and village integration.

Music and social impact came together at National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai as playback singers Shriram Iyer and Mahalakshmi Iyer presented Melodies for Change. Held on October 1 at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre, the concert combined live music with a social initiative focused on transformation and village integration.

The associated NGO works across areas including livelihoods, education, healthcare and environmental development.

The singers effortlessly moved between different eras and moods, starting with popular Hindi numbers before dipping into familiar retro favourites. Aaj Ki Raat, Bol Na Halke Halke, Kabhi Shaam Dhale, Mitwa and Falak Tak had the audience settling into the evening's rhythm.

The concert ended with Hindustani and Jai Ho, creating an upbeat finale for the audience.

But Melodies for Change was not just meant to be another evening of popular music. This concert was organized around the work of an NGO towards village transformation and integration with healthcare, education, and environmental initiatives at its core.

Mahalakshmi Iyer is amongst popular playback singers of India, having sung in more than 5000 songs in different languages like Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Konkani, Oriya, Punjabi, Marathi and more in both non-film and film albums. She sings in many genres of music, including Sufi, Ghazals, Devotional, Fusion, etc. She has performed extensively on stage in abroad and India with Jatin Lalit, A R Rahman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy and has done over a thousand shows as a solo performing artist with her band.

Mahalakshmi Iyer spoke about the connection that she created through live performances and the opportunity to bring purpose and music together. Shriram Iyer similarly highlighted the ability of music to connect audiences, artists, and songs while supporting a meaningful cause.

Shriram Iyer echoed the sentiment, saying, “Music has always been about connection between the artist, the song and the audience. This show gave us an opportunity to create that connection on stage while also supporting a meaningful cause."

The event at NCPA showcased how live performances can combine social purpose with cultural experiences, connecting audiences and artists through both community-focused initiatives and music.
