How Shillong Became India's Unofficial Music Capital

Shillong, often called 'India's Rock Capital,' is now the country’s top destination for music concerts

Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital, has been celebrated for its vibrant cultural life, colonial-era charm, and misty hills. But in recent years, the city has also earned the “Rock Capital of India” title. For large-scale musical events, Shillong has become a go-to destination, drawing both international and domestic crowds in huge numbers.

What sets Shillong apart from other places is its deep-rooted musical culture. In comparison to most Indian cities, the Khasi community has an affinity for Western music—jazz, rock, blues, and beyond. For many locals, music is an integral way of life and not just entertainment. Live performances by homegrown talent at Café Shillong and Cloud 9 are a regular affair, contributing to a year-round, lively music scene.

Recognizing the music tourism’s growing potential, over ₹4,000 crore has been invested in infrastructure development by the Meghalaya government. International festivals such as the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, featuring well-known global names such as Boney M, Akon, and R3HAB, have further elevated the global music profile of Shillong.

Shillong is now an important stop for the NH7 Weekender, one of the biggest music festivals in India. Its inclusion has led to the emergence of a diverse mix of artists and genres, enriching the musical experience for both visitors and residents.

Shillong has further come into the spotlight with the rise of local talent. The Shillong Chamber Choir, which was founded by the late Neil Nongkynrih, achieved fame nationwide after winning “India’s Got Talent” in the year 2010. Their perfect blend of Western and Indian classical music showcased the musical versatility of the city.
