From Kolkata’s Classrooms to Tomorrowland’s Main Stages: The Remarkable Journey of DJ Roop

He returns to Tomorrowland Belgium on July 18, 2026 for a second round.

Few independent Indian electronic artists can claim a journey that spans both the classroom and the world's biggest festival stages. For Kolkata-based DJ and producer DJ Roop, born Kaushik Das, that path has been shaped by a blend of musical tradition, technological expertise and a commitment to education.

Das began performing Indian classical music at the age of three before discovering electronic dance music during his high school years. Rather than moving away from his roots, he developed a sound that merges traditional Indian influences with contemporary electronic production, often drawing inspiration from instruments such as the sitar and tabla.

Alongside his career as a software engineer and performing artist, Das serves as a DJing instructor at the Tomorrowland Foundation Music & Arts School in Kolkata, an initiative established in partnership with Ek Tara to provide creative education opportunities for underserved communities. Through the programme, he introduces young students to DJing and music production, helping make the art form more accessible to aspiring talent.

His association with the Tomorrowland Foundation led to a career-defining opportunity in 2024 when he made his debut at Tomorrowland Belgium. The performance marked a significant milestone for the Kolkata artist and underscored the growing presence of independent Indian talent on the global electronic music circuit.

Two years later, Das is set to return to Tomorrowland Belgium on July 18, 2026, with a performance at the Old Spice Boat stage. Sharing a festival lineup with some of electronic music's biggest names, his second appearance reflects both his artistic growth and the increasing visibility of Indian artists at major international festivals.

While his performances continue to reach larger audiences, education remains central to his story. By balancing life as an artist, engineer and mentor, DJ Roop represents a new generation of Indian electronic musicians whose impact extends beyond the stage, helping create opportunities for the next wave of talent while carrying Indian representation to one of dance music's most influential platforms.
