From Roja to Ramayana: AR Rahman's Wonderment Tour Brings Three Decades of Music Back to Mumbai

Returning to Jio World Garden on November 1, The Wonderment Tour pairs Rahman's '90s soundtracks with his newest film work, a live orchestra, and a lineup of remarkable voices.

For a generation of listeners, AR Rahman's music arrived tied to a time and a place. "Chinna Chinna Aasai" on a Roja cassette, "Tu Hi Re" on the radio during a monsoon evening, "Dil Se Re" playing in a college canteen, and eventually "Jai Ho" at the Oscars, when a film score briefly felt like a national event. Those songs have since moved from tapes to streaming playlists, but the memories attached to them have stayed with the people who first heard them.

On November 1, Rahman brings that catalogue back to Mumbai with The Wonderment Tour at Jio World Garden, BKC. It is the tour's second outing in the city, following its India premiere at DY Patil Stadium in May 2025, which drew a crowd of more than 40,000. Produced by EVA Live, the new run comes with reworked arrangements, so the set is not a repeat of last year's show. GIGX joins the event as Community Partner, with Capital Group coming on board as Strategic Partner.

The concert will feature a live orchestra and large-scale visuals. The format suits Rahman's music, which has always relied on layered arrangements of strings, percussion and choir. Songs like "Kun Faya Kun," "Tere Bina," "Enna Sona" and "Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera" are listed among the evening's highlights, alongside material from the Roja, Bombay, Rangeela and Dil Se years.

Rahman will also be accompanied on stage by his son AR Ameen, along with Jonita Gandhi, Raghav, Nakul Abhyankar, Heer and Rakshita. Ameen's presence gives the evening a personal note, with father and son sharing songs from a catalogue Ameen grew up around. Jonita, who also performed at the tour's 2025 Mumbai premiere, brings continuity from the first edition.

The setlist also looks ahead. "Mangal Rang" from Ramayana, which Rahman scored with Hans Zimmer, is among the songs listed for the night, giving audiences an early chance to hear some of his most recent film music performed live. Placing it next to songs from the early '90s gives the set real range, covering a career that is still producing new work more than three decades in.

Mumbai also holds a particular place in that career. Several of Rahman's best-known Hindi soundtracks, from Bombay to Rangeela, are rooted in the city, and a home crowd singing them back is part of what sets these shows apart. After Sunday, the tour heads to Delhi's Backyard Sports Club on November 21 and Hyderabad's Gachibowli Stadium in January 2027, with no further Mumbai date announced.

The Wonderment Tour's Mumbai stop offers a chance to hear songs that have stayed with listeners for decades, played at full scale by the composer who wrote them. The moment with Ameen adds a personal layer, while the inclusion of his newest work makes the evening a look at where Rahman's music is going as much as where it has been.

The concert takes place on Sunday, November 1, at Jio World Garden, Mumbai, with gates opening at 5:45 pm and the show starting at 7 pm. Tickets are available exclusively on District by Zomato.
